Freelancing at
the Crossroads:
Jobs in a
Changing Landscape

How does a freelancer stir up a living out of the stew of citizen journalism, budget-challenged print outlets, corporate "newsrooms" and web 3.0, the next iteration beyond social media? Join a panel of writers and editors to discuss where freelancers might find their next meal ticket.

Panelists for "Freelancing at a Crossroads: Jobs in a Changing Landscape" include Amanda Castleman, freelance travel writer and editor of a Web 3.0 startup; Martin Wolk, business editor of MSNBC.com; George Bukota, industry journalist and marketing copywriter; and Randy Woods, managing editor of Seattle Business Monthly. Moderator will be Bill Thorness, freelance writer and editor.

It's all part of the second annual "All-Access Pass," sponsored by the Western Washington Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The Leap Day event will be held 1-4 p.m. Friday, February 29, at the REI flagship store, 222 Yale Ave. N., in Seattle. After the panel, meet with editors who buy freelance content.

In this eloquent collection, Greece, A Love Story, women share firsthand experiences of the people, history, and landscape of Greece. Their essays go beyond ordinary travelogue to capture the ways in which Greece has shaped lives or influenced decisions. In expressing their love for the country, these women share stories as visceral as they are poignant, as entertaining as they are endearing.

I explore my Big Fat Greek Divorce with an essay, At the Seashore with Medea: A marriage unravels in Athens. Camille Cusumano – whom I worked with on the corresponding Italy volume – also edited this anthology (Seal Press 2007). Buy it here Or pick up a copy and – gasp – have it signed in person.

Launch from regional markets into the national –- and international – arena. Panelists explore the steps, stresses and successes of freelancing far from home.

Broadening the Net: Freelancing Far From Home
Insulated by snowcapped peaks and constant cloud cover, the Puget Sound region is remote from much of the publishing world, often keeping journalists from seeking new horizons. Yet stories – and publishing venues – abound on the national and international scenes.

The Western Washington Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists presents a forum on national and international freelancing. Panelists include Cynthia Flash, Colleen Roach and Elaine Portfield with moderator Amanda Castleman. J.S. Parker reviewed the event for the Seattle Writergrrl zine Uncapped.
